English at Park - A snapshot of a typical
year!
Pupils are put into sets according to ability but this procedure is
constantly reviewed throughout the year.
We follow the National Literacy Strategy in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
We are committed to raising achievement and enabling pupils to reach their
full potential.
Term 1 |
Instructional writing -
imperative verbs (bossy doing words). Pupils make a slotted book and write
recipes. |
Investigating story openings
using " George's Marvellous Medicine", "The Iron Man" and "The Ghost of
Thomas Kempe". |
Character study looking at how
characters are described in Roald Dahl's "Matilda" and Jacqueline Wilson's
"Double Act". |
Play scripts and speech
punctuation using "Peter Pan" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox". |
Term 2 |
How do we build suspense into
our stories? Pupils write their own scary stories. |
What is a fable? Pupils read
and investigate features of a fable and write their own. |
Pupils study Tennyson's "the
Lady of Shallot" and perform poetry. |
Fairy stories - pupils examine
traditional tales and write their own. |
Some pupils will also start a
programme of study to further support their literacy. |
Term 3 |
What is a Greek Myth? Pupils
read and recognise the features of this form of text and produce their own. |
Pupils read and discuss
stories from different cultures. Poetry work is linked into this theme. |
Year 5 work on World War Two
in history and this topic is continued in English through war time letter
writing. Some pupils also read the play "Evacuees" by Carolyn Sloan. |
